Each Amazon RPPI widget regularly refreshes itself.
The RPPI number can change with time, and can, with a bit of effort even be improved on. Find out how...
About the RPPI
The RPPI (RankTracer Product Popularity Index - pronounce rip) uses a weighted algorithm incorporating sales and review data, tagging and pricing information and anything else of relevance to provide a meaningful and more reliable way to determine a product's popularity within its niche market. This contrasts sharply with the Amazon sales rank which can jump around drastically within the space of a few hours, giving a false impression of performance to the casual observer.
Because the RPPI analyzes a product within the context of its niche, you can be assured that a good quality book or product will attain a high RPPI score even if it is not a best seller. By the same token, a book that has not lived up to its hype or expectation (and disappointed its reviewers) can earn a low RPPI even though it may have sold more units than a less well known title.
A score of 50 represents the perfect average. Anything higher than 50 represents a more popular product and anything less than 50 represents a product that is less popular that its average competitor.
The RPPI does change and track the market, so a product that has a great review which leads to many sales will increase its RPPI over products that are not selling as much. There is nothing you or a competitor can do to alter your RPPI score directly. However, encouraging customers to write positive reviews, getting Amazon or your publisher to promote your book or product, and undertaking marketing and promotional intitiatives to increase sales will all affect the score indirectly.

How to use 'em
These widgets are pretty darn versatile, but here are some great ideas that we've come up with. Drop us an email if you think of anything else, and if we like it, we'll feature you on our site...

- live updates - maybe you're bored of checking up on amazon all the time, or logging in to tracking sites. Add this widget to your homepage, blog, or any site you visit regularly and it will keep you posted 24/7
- serious promotion - let's say you're a member of a writing group and all your friends agree to add a widget of your new book to their sites. In only a few hours your book has gone from having one or two points of sale to hundreds, maybe thousands all over the Net
- proof positive - so you've reviewed a book? Why not add a widget to the review to 'prove' how well it is selling. That way your readers know your giving them good information.
- marketing intelligence - let's say you've convinced webmaster X to review your book. As soon as the review goes live, the widget goes crazy as your sales go through the roof. At least you know Mr X is the go to guy next time. Better than wasting money on Y and Z again and again.
- global overview - do you have any idea what a pain it is to get information of every Amazon site in the world and put it in one place? Why not go try it and then come back here and do it all in seconds.
- cross promotion - why not set up a mutual link exchange on your publisher's forum. Swop tracking widgets with authors of complimentary titles and grow your online presence to increase sales
- green eyed monster - jealous of J. K. Rowling's sales? Why not track her books and find out when and where she makes the big sales
